Q&A with Cathleen Griffeth, Sr. Software Developer Engineer
In celebration of Engineers Week 2023, we’re getting to know some of our very own engineers. In this Q&A, we shine the spotlight on Cathleen Griffeth, Sr. Software Developer Engineer.
Why did you choose to become an engineer?
I always enjoyed solving problems, logic and mathematics, so it seemed to open this path without a lot of thought!
What are the most important qualities for an engineer to have?
I would attribute successful engineers as those who seek to fully understand and ask questions with that interest in mind. One unconfirmed assumption can lead to solutions missing the mark, like the infamous tree-swing cartoon depicts!
What do you enjoy most about being an engineer? And about being an engineer at Edgio?
I love the challenge of building technology solutions for complex business opportunities.
Edgio, and my experience with the Uplynk team over the last 20 months, not only offers me the opportunity to use my skills but also enables me to expand my technology skills. Uplynk team members demonstrate their commitment to success with their helpfulness and willingness to share knowledge!
What excites you about the future of engineering and what we are doing here at Edgio?
Engineering is a lot like putting puzzle pieces together while playing chess on a dynamic board; thinking of the next move is key! As we see the nature of streaming evolve, it is exciting to be a part of a team involved in designing solutions needed to accommodate shifting landscapes.
What advice would you give to someone who is just beginning their engineering career?
Be open-minded and never underestimate the value of having a sound board; discussing what you are building with just one other person could illuminate questions you might not have thought of, leading you to better solutions!
Share a fun fact about yourself or something you enjoy doing outside of work.
In addition to having a fur family of two rescue cats and two rescue dogs (note: there is a no-vacancy sign out today!), I enjoy being a Constitution Coach volunteer with the Patriot Academy, holding classes that teach America’s founding and the US Constitution.
Engineers Week 2023 runs from February 19 to 25. This year’s theme — Creating the Future — recognizes how engineers play a vital role in innovating solutions to global challenges that impact future generations. By working together to develop new technologies, products and opportunities, engineers create new possibilities that make the world a better place. This Engineers Week we hope that you’ll take a moment to recognize and celebrate the work of engineers and engage students in engineering. DiscoverE, the organization behind Engineers Week, has free resources you can use to inspire future innovators, such as hands-on engineering activities and lesson plans, information about engineering education, and pathways to a technical careers. Visit DiscoverE.org and get the help you need to focus on the “E” in STEM.
