gigaom edge development platforms edgio

This GigaOm Radar report examines 13 of the top edge development platforms and compares offerings against the capabilities (table stakes, key features, and emerging features) and nonfunctional requirements (business criteria) outlined in the companion Key Criteria report. Together, these reports provide an overview of the market, identify leading edge development platform offerings, and help decision-makers evaluate these solutions so they can make a more informed investment decision.

Why is Edgio a Leader?

The report speaks for itself: “Edgio’s capability to deliver edge-native execution environments, serverless functions, and IaaS-based compute instances positions the vendor in the Innovation/Platform Play quadrant. Edgio is an Outperformer because of its extensive development pipeline and cadence and is positioned in the Leaders circle.”

What Edgio solutions and products were evaluated?

Edgio has segmented its solution into three offerings designed to match the following use cases:

  • Edgio Performance: Empowers teams to improve webpage loads to deliver fast speeds, with caching of dynamic content and predictive prefetching to the browser. Edgio Performance includes the CDN, serverless cloud functions, edge functions, built-in edge insights observability, and performance monitoring (RUM) capabilities.
  • Edgio Security: Protection for publicly facing websites against a range of modern attacks with Web Application and API Protection (WAAP). This includes OWASP Top 10 and zero-day vulnerability protection and protection from automated attacks with an advanced bot manager, DDoS protection, Client-Side Protection (WAF), and Attack Surface Management (ASM).
  • Edgio Sites: Allows organizations to host and migrate websites and applications to a modern API-first architecture. It supports popular modern front-end frameworks, including React, Next.js, Angular, Vue.js, and many more.

The principle GigaOm analyst, Andrew Green, states, “Edgio’s solution is suitable for a wide range of use cases but is particularly strong for industries such as digital media, ecommerce, financial services, and technology firms. The solution is suitable for both web-delivered services and media and application delivery.”. Edgio recently rolled out bundled pricing that includes all three offerings along with managed security at a flat rate with unlimited traffic. Edgio’s bundled and unlimited traffic pricing can enable organizations to secure and accelerate publicly facing applications with a predictable OpEx.”

How to interpret the Radar graphic

The GigaOm Radar synthesizes a practitioner-led, data-driven analysis of a technology sector. GigaOm analysts select solutions based on support for table stakes—features we expect all solutions in the sector to provide. They then score both the capabilities that differentiate solutions and the non-functional requirements that impact the value solutions have to the organization. Vendors are positioned on the Radar chart based on their relative scores.

The closer to the center of the Radar chart a vendor sits, the better its execution and value, with top performers occupying the inner Leaders circle. In addition, vendors are classified as “‘Outperformer”’ (highest level), “Fast Mover” (middle level) or “‘Forward Mover”’ (standard level). Edgio is proud to be assessed as both a Leader and an Outperformer.
