Edgio Origin Shield adds an additional layer of defense to safeguard your critical websites and applications. By effectively removing them from the Internet-accessible IP address space, it thwarts direct attacks on the application origin. Increase your resilience against direct-to-origin DDoS attacks.
Reduce Origin Load and Operating Costs
Edgio Origin Shield reduces the number of requests that are sent to your origin for the same object. Fewer requests at your origin can preserve availability during peak traffic times. Fewer requests to the origin also mean lower egress traffic costs, as well as lower origin CPU/memory consumption.
How it works?
When a request is made to an edge node on the Edgio network for content that is not cached locally, it will first request the content from one or more designated origin shield nodes.
If the content exists at one of the origin shield nodes, it will be retrieved and delivered to the requesting node over Edgio’s private backbone.
Only if the content does not exist in the cache of the origin shield nodes will the request be forwarded to origin. As a global provider, we offer customers the option of assigning a single origin node as the shield or a shield node per region (U.S., EU, Asia, etc.).
This greatly reduces requests to origin, minimizes origin egress costs, and improves user experience.
